Thoroughly Modern: The Pioneering Life of Barbara Ker-Seymer, Photographer focuses on one of the outstanding British photographers of her generation. Vivacious, sassy and out to have fun, Ker-Seymer (1905-1993) was fiercely independent. Her work defined a talented, forward-looking network of artists, dancers, writers, actors and musicians, who flocked to her Bond Street Studio or featured in her innovative photo-journalism for prestigious Harper’s Bazaar. Her brilliance, intelligence, sparkle and wit enabled her to link arms with the Surrealists, the Bloomsbury Group, the Bright Young Things and, most gloriously, the worlds of theatre, cabaret and jazz.
Thoroughly Modern will be published in June 2023 by Virago.
Sarah Knights’ first book, Bloomsbury’s Outsider: A Life of David Garnett, was shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Slightly Foxed Best First Biography Prize.
