Charles Saumarez Smith started teaching the history of design at the Victoria and Albert Museum London in 1982, and has been Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Director of the National Gallery, and Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts. He has written widely on architecture and the history of museums.
